Tuesday's Toons No.2

Cosmic Cabbies:

When you need to get around in a city or a town any taxi service will do, but what happens when you have the business meeting of your life in another galaxy and an alien blockade has formed keeping you from reaching your destination?! What do you do?!!! You could either tuck your tail between your legs and head for the unemployment line or you could simply call; drum roll please, Cosmic Cabbies!!! (said in a deep resonating voice followed by a cymbal crash).

Each Cosmic Cabbie driver is trained to handle any and every situation that may arise including alien blockades. Defensive and offensive driving, hand to hand combat, weapons training, the list goes on and on. Bottom line, we get you there on time. Your nerves might be little rattled and you might wet yourself, but no one will ever accuse you of not being prompt.

Call Now!!!

Monday's Monster No.2

The Orange Cone Shaped Monster:

I was driving to work the other day and I came around a curve when suddenly I was face to face with this orange cone shaped monster. Now I know what you're thinking, it was just a construction cone that got left in the middle of the street by some road crew. Nothing to panic over. Well that's very possible and normally I would agree, but I could have sworn this thing jumped out at me.

So I quickly swerved to avoid it in my 4 cylinder P.O.S. and as I passed by this menacing beast I actually saw it inch closer with it's sharpened fang's nipping at my rear tire.

I was fortunate that day and I escaped with my rust bucket in tact, but I'll be watching out for you orange cone shaped monster. Oh yes, I will. :)

Spot Illustrations

A few quick spot illustrations I did for two separate articles for Grand Rapids Magazine. I posted two color versions of the girls with cell phones. I'm not sure which one they're going with, but hey it's in their hands now.

Hey!, that should be a band name, "Ladies & Gentleman, Girls With Cell Phones!!!! (crowd cheers) :)

Tuesday's Toons No.1

Hello, It's Tuesday, time for another or should I say very first installment of the hypothetical toon posting known as Tuesday's Toons.

When the last bell rings and the students go home mischievous monsters emerge from their slumber and run a muck in middle schools all across the land. Stealing chalkboard erasers, changing locker combinations, running off with toilet paper, will it never end?!!

But wait! There's hope. Enter, The Night Janitor Monster Wranglers. Their job is simple. Wrangle monsters and return the school to it's normal state before the morning bell rings and students flood the hallways. These my friend, are the unsung hero's of the night or at least to a bunch of unaware snot nosed kids. :)

Monday's Monster No. 1

The High Five-er

I think most people would agree that after a nice weekend Monday's are the hardest days to get back into the work mode. So I thought I'd start something called, "Monday's Monster" nothing more than a quick sketch of a Monster to go along with this moody day.

So with that said, meet "The High Five-er" he's always up for a High Five. Hey, you got that raise? High Five!, You're favorite sports team won? High Five!, that big zit went away? High Five! There is one thing though, don't ever leave the High Five-er hanging. You're in for a world of hurt if you do. :)

Backgrounds Part Two

I got an email from a friend telling me she liked the third sketch of the school backgrounds I posted earlier this week. So not wanting to disappoint her, I tried my hand at coloring it. Two versions, the first is one color, the second is full color. Thanks for visiting.

Oh yeah, thanks Karen for helping me make up my mind. :)

Tuesday's Toons

Ok, I realize it's not Tuesday and I'm jumping the gun a bit, but after a previous post I made called "Hypothetical Toons" I decided to start something called, "Tuesday's Toons". So time permitting of course, I'm going to post a hypothetical cartoon idea every Tuesday. Nothing more than a bunch of sketches based off of a silly made up cartoon name. And no less than three characters. I figure it would be a great way to keep focused more. :)

At any rate, the following sketches are a preview of one character for next week's Tuesday's Toons.

I love drawing characters, but I seem to avoid doing backgrounds. I'm trying change that. so the following are a few meager attempts at the interior of a school. After I do a few more, I'll decide which one I like, color it and post it in the near future.

hey, if any of these three views appeal to you and you'd like to see it colored, let me know. It'll make my decision easier. :)

Hypothetical Toons

The following drawings are from an exercise that I used to do in order to challenge myself and I think it's one worth starting up again.

I would come up with a hypothetical cartoon name. I wouldn't worry about the story line or anything like that, I would simply come up with a funny name for a cartoon and draw what I thought those characters would look like. For example, The Amish Disco Boys. hmm...What would they look like? Who is their arch enemy?

Anywho...give it a try. enough said. Thanks for visiting :)

More Random Characters

hello. Just a few random sketches for today. I'll be posting some more art for specific projects in the next few days.

Oh yeah and if feel like throwin' a bone to a very appreciative artist, go check out my new online store. The link is to the left. There's currently one piece of art being printed as a poster for sale, but I plan on adding more.

Friday The 13th

Typically not the type of character I would draw, but it being friday the 13th and all I decided to draw Jason. He's not too menacing at this size. Maybe the only reason he's so angry is because no one remembers his birthday. :)

Quick Draw

I recently found a link to this artist named Saxton Moore and I noticed that there was a drawing of Quick Draw McGraw an old Hanna Barberra cartoon done in his own style. Really well done and super simplified. At any rate, about a year ago my friends and I used to redraw existing cartoons in our own style and then critique them. One of the ones we did was, you guessed it, Quick Draw Mcgraw. It was a fun exercise to do one I think is worth revisiting. It was really neat seeing the different approaches we all took towards the same subject matter. Below is my version of Quick Draw and his side kick Babaloo.

Oh yeah, I added Saxton Moore's blog to my links and encourage everyone to check out his work.

Sigmund Revisited

When I was kid Sid & Marty Krofft ruled the television world. I recall fondly watching shows like Land of the Lost, The Bugalooos, H.R. Puff N Stuff, the list goes on. These were live action shows, no cartoons, but colorful sets and outrageous costume designs. One show that I always looked forward to watching was Sigmund and the Sea Monsters.

I'm not sure what re-sparked my interest in these shows, but I decided to revisit Sigmund and redraw them in a cartoon style. I actually bought a DVD with 4 episdoes on it to help me visualize it better. Man what a trip. The acting wasn't great, it had canned laughter and you could see the set up of a one line joke a mile away, but I couldn't stop watching it. I loved it. The funny thing is Sigmund ran from 1973-1975 and I remembered every episode. Whoa.

Anyway, the following are a few sketches with simple color concepts. I did take one liberty which was to put Sigmund and his friends actually in the ocean. After all, he was a sea monster. :)

Take A Seat

Really quick post for today.

I've been working on background and prop designs lately. I'm hoping to post some background concepts soon, but here's a bunch of simple chairs that fall into the prop design category I sketched up and colored last night. Thanks for visiting.

Children's Newsletter

Happy New Year.

I've been working on a children's newsletter for a few month's now. It's for the church that I attend. It's a very simple concept, one main story that carries through a single issue which will be about eight pages in length. Everything will revolve around the main story, keeping it focused. Besides the story each issue will have a fun facts section, games and puzzles, a coloring section and area where the kids can get involved. "Hey Kids, submit your own artwork and see it in the next issue!" that kind of thing. I know if I was kid again, I'd flip if I saw my drawing printed up in a magazine type thing.

So why do this? well, being a parent myself I know it's a struggle for kids to sit still and quiet during a church service. You hope they're listening to what's being said, but at such a young age it has to be hard. That's why I thought that a monthly or bi-monthly (still haven't decided which one is more realistic, considering this is a labor of love) children's newsletter would help give them something to do while learning about a few Bible stories at the same time.

At any rate, the images posted are for one of the issues just about done. It's the story of David & Goliath. The good thing is that I'm not under any deadlines and time restraints, so I'm getting a number of issues completed all at once, that way I'll have some sort of reserve to draw from.

Once again, thanks to all for visiting.
