Background Art

I think I've said this before, but I love Hanna Barbera. One thing I love about their cartoons are the backgrounds which have had a profound influence in many of today's cartoons. At any rate, I needed to clear my head a little bit and I did these two backgrounds on my lunch time. They're heavily inspired by many of the HB backgrounds as well as other cartoons such as Samurai Jack, Tennesee Tuxedo...

Thanks for visiting.

Thanks for the comment! Saw these over at Frederator. They are amazing as I can see the Samurai Jack influence. I hope my own backgrounds can eventually get to this type of quality.

Wow,one thing is to be inspired, but it is a totally different thing to nail it right on the head! I am also inspired by SJ, HB, and anything retro-ish, and I have tried for many hours to replicate the style miserably, and here you are doing it on your lunch time. To quote daffy, "you're despicable!"

Can you Mr Foster in the name of mercy, tell us how you got that texture on that rock on the left in the bottom pic background_sketch_02) and was it done in flash? I'm guessing if you did it in flash it was done using a bitmap fill for your brush?

Anyways, great work man, you really are special.

thanks everyone.

Matador, these backgrounds were done in Photoshop. I came across some custom brushes and then tweaked them to my liking. I used a lot of different layers as well.

I've been thinking of combining more textured backgrounds with the cleaner Flash character art in my animations.

I'm glad to hear there are other "Retro" fans out there. thanks again.

These are awesome, and thanks for answering Matador's question. That was my exact thinking as soon as I saw it. I've got Photoshop, used it some, but have still not mastered the painting aspect of it. Superb work!
